The flag commonly associated with Martinique shows a blue field (varying between dark and light blue) with a white cross, and four white L-shaped fer-de-lance snakes (Bothrops lanceolatus) in each quarter. This design dates from the 18th century. As an overseas department of France, the official flag is the French Tricolore.
