Did you know?

  • Spain goes from the wild Atlantic cliffs of Galicia to the black volcanic beaches of the Canary Islands — its 8,000 km of coastline are among the most varied in Europe.
  • Madrid is the highest capital in the EU (667 m), perched on a huge plateau in the center of the country.
  • Spain has a timezone that does not match its geography — it follows CET (same as Germany) despite being aligned with the UK.

Flag History

The flag of Spain, as it is defined in the Constitution of 1978, consists of three horizontal stripes: red, yellow and red, the yellow stripe being twice the height of each red stripe. Traditionally, the middle stripe colour was called by the archaic term gualda ; hence the flag's nickname la Rojigualda. The middle stripe bears the coat of arms of Spain, being mandatory in several cases.
