Afghanistan has changed its flag more than any other country in the 20th century. The current tricolor of black, red, and green has been used in various forms since 1928. Black represents the dark past and foreign occupation, red symbolizes the blood of those who fought for independence, and green represents hope, prosperity, and Islam. The national emblem in the center features a mosque with a mihrab and minbar, wheat sheaves, and the Shahada (Islamic creed). The flag's design has fluctuated with political changes, including periods under the Taliban when a plain white flag with the Shahada was used.
