Created by Manuel Belgrano in 1812 during the Argentine War of Independence, the flag features two light blue (celeste) stripes and one white stripe. Belgrano was inspired by the colors of the sky on the day of the May Revolution in 1810. The Sun of May (Sol de Mayo) was added to the center in 1818, representing the Inca sun god Inti and commemorating the appearance of the sun through cloudy skies when the first mass demonstration for independence occurred on May 25, 1810. The sun has 32 rays, alternating between straight and wavy, and features a human face, a design element from Inca mythology. Argentina's flag influenced several other South American flags.
