Antigua und Barbuda

Designed by Sir Reginald Samuel, a local artist, the flag was adopted on February 27, 1967, when the nation achieved self-governance. The design is rich with symbolism: the black represents the African ancestry of the people, the blue symbolizes hope and the Caribbean Sea, the white stands for the sandy beaches, and the red represents the dynamism of the people. The golden rising sun symbolizes the dawn of a new era in the nation's history. The V-shape formed by the colors represents victory. The sun has seven points representing the six parishes and the island of Barbuda. This flag remained unchanged after full independence in 1981.
